Homemade is made with eggs & durum wheat. Manufactured is made with water, salt and durum wheat.
Trofie is formed by taking small pieces of pasta and rolling them between your hands and are tapered that the top and bottom. I personally think there is no substitute for homemade Trofie, but there are manufactured types available. Trofie are traditionally served with Pesto Genovese, but can be found with other sauces of ragu, mushrooms or fish.
